How to Become a Successful Blogger with Elna Cain

If anyone knows how to become a successful blogger and freelance writer, it’s Elna Cain.

Elna is someone I really look up to. When I decided to start a freelance writing business, I turned to Elna.

I had been following her for a while, and she has great writing skills, so I knew I was in good hands.

Putting together a sentence and writing coherently was already in my skill set, but there was so much I didn’t know about the world of freelance writing.

I didn’t know where to find writing clients, places to avoid like content mills, or where to find work and what job boards were valuable.

She is so genuine and not afraid to show her mistakes.

Honest Elna Cain Teaches How to Be a Freelance Writer With No Experience

On one of her blogs (see below for all of her blogs), she goes over how she became a freelance writer with no experience, and she shows us all of the blips along the way.

She reveals her first pitch, as well as her current pitch, and shows you how to avoid her mistakes if you want to become a freelance writer.

She teaches all kinds of things like how to find writing jobs, where to gain experience quickly, how to start building your portfolio, how to pick a writing niche, and where to find potential clients.

If you want to find freelance writing work and leave your day job, Elna can teach you.

But I Don’t Need to Know Where To Find Writing Gigs

She teaches people how to become a freelance writer with no experience, but she is also blogger, and quite a successful one at that.

If you want to start a blog, she also teaches people how to blog for traffic and how to leverage Pinterest to help drive traffic to your site.

After being a super annoying pest and emailing Elna a million times with writing related questions, I thought I would take a stab at it and ask if she would want to do an interview.

For a writer, she isn’t a very wordy person.  She didn’t say much, so I thought she forgot about it.

Then one day, I checked my email, and she had sent back her responses.

I gotta say, I’m totally pumped that she let me interview her.

Make sure you hang onto every word because she is an expert at how to become a freelance writer with no experience and how to be a successful blogger.

1. How long have you been blogging and writing for?

I’ve been blogging for four years and freelance writing for about five years now!

2. How many active blogs do you currently have?

Yes! I have multiple blogs, but not all of them are being used. These are my main blogs:

  • Twins Mommy is a blog to help mom bloggers gain money with their blog

  • Elna Cain is my freelance writing blog to help new writers land clients

3. What is your favorite topic to write about?

I love writing about blogging, writing, Pinterest marketing, and being more
productive. Those are the main topics I write on Twins Mommy and Elna Cain.

Did you know Elna has courses to help freelance writers get started?  I took Elna’s Write to 1K writing course.  Find out what I thought of it in my review of the Write to 1K Course by Elna Cain.

4. If you had to ramp up traffic on a blog quickly, what 3 things would you
focus on first?

If you see your blog traffic tanking here are three easy things you can get started doing:

  1. Get my free blog traffic planner with a weekly plan, monthly plan and
yearly plan. I set up for ramping up your traffic and get some money
    too!
  2. Create alternate pins for your most popular posts and once that are
income generating or list building. Make it a goal to create at least
    one alternate pin a day.
  3. Write every day for a set time. I’ve proven time and time again that if you write a blog post every day and promote it you will see a jump in page views a month later.

5. I know you and your husband like to start new blogs all the time, do you
write a minimum amount of content before promoting it?

When we start new blogs or take ones over, we don’t have a set number before
publishing it. Our philosophy is to age the blog as quickly as possible. The older a blog is, the better chance it has for potential ranking in Google.

6. Do you use the juice from your other blogs to get your new blog going?

Nope. I try not to link my other blogs to my current blogs too much.

7. What advice would you give a new motivated blogger to succeed quickly?

The best advice I can give you is to create highly valuable content for your
audience.

Get to know who reads your blog, or you want to read your blog, and then create problem-solving content for them.

Do you want to know how to become a freelance writer with no experience?  Get Elna’s Write To 1K Course here.  She also does teaches how to set up a writer website in a weekend, how to blog for traffic, and how to be successful on Pinterest.

8. What advice would you give a new motivated freelance writer to succeed
quickly?

For new freelance writers, the quickest way to succeed is to get paid to build your portfolio. You can get paid to guest post as a way to earn your first $100 as a writer.

9. What social media platforms do you like best and why?

I like Pinterest and Facebook the most and that is where I spend a good chunk of my time nurturing my audience. Facebook is great for brand awareness and to get closer to my audience so that I can help them.

Pinterest is great right now for bringing in tons of traffic and a new audience for my blogs.

10. We are dorks in my household, so I have to ask, what is your favorite nerdy movie or book?

I just picked up Harley Merlin and the Secret Coven as I hear it’s Harry Potter for adults and can’t wait to read it!

ConvertKit is an incredible program that is very user-friendly. When I was learning, I went from not knowing the program at all to setting up an email sequence, sending out an email blast (they call them broadcasts), and setting up forms all in the first session.

It does have a monthly fee, but it is worth every penny. As a newbie blogger, you don't want to pay for a lot of extras and I know it can be tempting, but this is by far one of the best investments you will make.

Siteground is not just a service for me. They have been a sort of partner and IT helper. when I was a newbie blogger, I didn't know how to do anything. They have a chat function as a help resource that I used almost daily to figure out how to install certain things, or figure out the backend of WordPress.

They have saved me hundreds of dollars on services. You can set up your site, buy your domain, get privacy for your information connected to your domain, and get all kinds of help if you need it.
